My countertop doesn't have a consistent look, is it defective?

Pitts, fissures or inclusions are a normal part of natural granite and contribute to the natural beauty of the stone. These are NOT considered to be defects. Granite, which is crystalline in structure, always has tiny pits - spaces between some mineral crystals. Granite sometimes has natural fissures as well, which may look like cracks. These are NOT structural defects, but a naturally occurring result of the immense heat and pressure that formed the granite eons ago. These characteristics are part of the natural beauty of stone and will not impair the function or durability of the material. The manufacturing of quartz melds nature and modern technology into an unparalleled surface material. Because the base material in quartz countertops is a mined natural mineral, there is a possibility of slight color variations and particulate concentrations that may cause uneven color distribution. These features add to the authentic look of the quartz.

The pattern on my granite does not match. Is the stone defective?

Granite is a natural stone; therefore patterns and color vary from slab to slab and even within a single slab. Colors can vary by tone, shade hue, particulate structure and veining. This can affect the final look of your countertop. It is highly recommended that if you have chosen granite with a lot of movement; ask to preview your layout.

Will seams be visible on my countertops?

Though some stones have patterns that will help to conceal seams, the layout of the kitchen plays the dominant role in the design and requirement for seams. Every effort is made to limit the number and visual impact of seams. We are always sensitive to aesthetic considerations and strive to reduce the impact of seams when possible. Final seam placement will be determined during the engineering phase. We go to great lengths to get your seam tight and smooth. We strictly follow MIA guidelines on seam tolerances.

Does my countertop need to be sealed?

Quartz is a product that is virtually non-porous and does not need to be sealed. Because granite is porous, it needs to be sealed. Granite purchased from Star is pre-sealed during the fabrication process. We also offer a limited lifetime warranty on your granite tops. Just ask your Star salesperson for details.

Will my countertop scratch or chip?

Although granite and quartz are one of the hardest surfaces on earth, both can scratch. It is recommended to always use a cutting board. Under normal use it is unlikely your countertop will chip. Obviously, the edges are more susceptible to chipping than the middle of a surface, and if struck with enough force, a chip can occur. Such occurrences are not covered by any manufacturing warranty but are usually repairable.

Can I put hot things on my granite or quartz?

Generally, granite and quartz are very heat resistant, but it depends on "how hot" of an object. It is always better to be on the safe side and use a hot pad between the countertop and hot surface

How do I clean my countertops?

Warm, soapy water and mild household cleaners are suitable for cleaning. Blot up spills immediately. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
